Marrying Abroad

If you decide to get married abroad you may be required to complete a number of additional legal steps to ensure you comply with all the relevant legal requirements in the country you marry. Each country has its own specific rules and requirements and you may therefore decide to instruct a local agent to assist in marrying abroad.
You will quite often require a number of documents to be presented to the relevant authorities in the country where you are planning to get married and they may include the following:

  • Certificate of No Impediment (CNI)
  • Identification documents e.g. passport, utility bill
  • An affidavit or statutory declaration regarding your marital status
  • Birth certificates
  • Divorce certificates (if any)
  • Death certificate (if widowed)

These documents may need to be notarised and / or apostilled before you can marry. It is therefore important that you establish very early on what is required, as it may take some time to get all the documents in the correct format so that they meet the relevant requirements.

If you have a requirement to have your documents to be notarised and / or apostilled then please do get in touch and I will be happy to assist you.
